Sun sold to Oracle for 7.4 billion?

See the history of Sun brand on this page:

It begs the question, who did Oracle pay for the  aquisition? Did the money go to Sun, in which case, Oracle gets it as the new owners. An example of this type of 'deal' is when Cathay Pacific made Dragonair a wholly owned subsidiary.

My correspondence file includes letters from Cathay Pacific warning me not to contact Dragonair employees. At the time of the takeover, Dragon was the biggest domestic airline in China with more destinations and passengers than the other two. It was decided in a closed meeting of teh leaders, by vote, that Dragon's opposition would handle their bookings. (more)

My programming experience producing software for Dragon Systems, in speech recognition and language suites.

Background from this page:

http://park-lane.yolasite.com/sun.php

Sun is a proponent of open systems in general and Unix in particular, and a major contributor to open source software.[5]

On April 20, 2009, Sun and Oracle Corporation announced that they entered into a definitive agreement under which Oracle will acquire Sun for $7.4 billion.[6][7] The deal is still pending, with no date yet given for its completion.

Sun's manufacturing facilities are located in Hillsboro, Oregon, USA and Linlithgow, Scotland.

In 2004, Sun surprised the industry when, after having cultivated a reputation as one of Microsoft's most vocal antagonists, it entered into a joint relationship with them, resolving various legal entanglements between the two companies and receiving US$1.95 billion in settlement payments from them.[67] Sun now supports Microsoft Windows on its x64 systems, and has announced other collaborative agreements with Microsoft, including plans to support each others' virtualization environments.[68]

Q-What do you get for your money?

A-The JavaScript timing system.

The Timing system is part of the browser which you are currently using for free.

Microsoft uses its profits to distribte a JavaScript capable browser for free, despite losing a Court action to Sun.

When you  register (pay for) your timing system, you get the rest of the browser for free. This enables you to connect to the world wide web.

We are also considering throwing in the latest version of Microsoft (or NEC -in Asia) Windows for free, but you would have to ask Microsoft for a refund if you already have a copy- good luck!

Q-What are the advantages?

There is a full lifetime replacement guarantee, but you cannot get your money back, otherwise you will have had use of it for free. You may however sell it to a third party. The advantage is that there is a strong possibility that at some stage it may stop working correctly. If you are using a Microsoft Internet Explorer browser you will find yourself connected to a Microsoft network, and at some time in the future you may no longer be able to connect to the internet, just as Microsoft now makes it difficult for Mozilla browsers to connect to some of their services.

How does it work?

There are three parts to the software which connects you to the internet. (Operating System/Browser and Timing System)

One is the Operating System of the computer you are using. This is software not hardware, and because the browser does not have all the software it needs, you need to purchase the other half (or third) from microsoft. This includes all the software originally sold as DOS 5 (or Disc Operating System 5) which was under 1mb at 640k.

It includes ASCII (AmericanStandard Code for Information Interchange)

The DOS Commands, such as copy, and xcopy

Device Drivers such as ANSI.sys, DISPLAY.sys, HIMEM.sys, SMARTDRV.sys, used to access expanded (physical) memory and extended (Virtual) memory, according to the Lotus/Intel/Microsoft/AST eXtended-Memory Specification (XMS). This is the Microsoft Virtual Machine which is now the Java Virtual Machine, and ensures that only one specific piece of software occupies one physical space within memory.

 The Browser

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_browser
A web browser can also be defined as an application software or program designed to enable users to access, retrieve and view documents and other resources on the Internet.

Although browsers are primarily intended to access the World Wide Web, they can also be used to access information provided by web servers in private networks or files in file systems.

The JavaScript Timing System

The JavaScript Timing System comes installed with the web browser software you already have on your computer, but includes the mouse software (and scroll bars) as they were originally part of the Microsoft operating system, but became redundant when the browser included them, and there was no space for two copies of the same software, causing a conflict.

The Mouse

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mouse_%28computing%29#Naming
In computing, a mouse is a pointing device that functions by detecting two-dimensional motion relative to its supporting surface.
The mouse's motion typically translates into the motion of a cursor on a display, which allows for fine control of a graphical user interface.

The trackball was invented by Tom Cranston, Fred Longstaff and Kenyon Taylor working on the Royal Canadian Navy's DATAR project in 1952. It used a standard Canadian five-pin bowling ball.
It was not patented, as it was a secret military project.[3]
